The footage, obtained by Spanish newspaper El País, shows the bridge collapsing around three metres (ten feet) into a gully below. The incident took place on Tuesday 7 June.

Eight people were injured in the incident, including four city council members, two city officials and a local reporter. One of the injured was the mayor’s wife.

The bridge had recently been renovated, and officials had gathered to celebrate its reopening.

The mayor of the Mexican city of Cuernavaca, a weekend destination for Mexico City residents lying just to the south of the capital, told local news sources that just prior to the inaugural walk some people had been jumping on the bridge.

Mayor José Luis Urióstegui added that the number of officials and journalists on the bridge at the time of the collapse likely exceeded its safe capacity.

Urióstegui himself was on the bridge at the time of the collapse, although was not one of those injured.
