POSSIBLE TORNADO - Images circulating on social media show a meteorological phenomenon resembling a tornado near Nusbaum, in Germany, just across the border yesterday. RTL has reached out to Meteolux to see whether they could confirm was indeed a tornado. Meteolux are unable to confirm from the photos, but said there are many elements pointing towards it being a tornado.

FOOTBALLER COURT - The Gerson Rodrigues court case has been pushed back to 29 November. The Luxembourg international footballer is facing court over three counts of alleged bodily harm. He is also accused of insulting the police. Two cases of assault date back to 2019 and 2022 where Gerson is accused of punching men in the face. Also in 2022, the footballer is alleged to have punched his ex-girlfriend, former Miss Luxembourg 2020, in the face.

WORLD ALZHEIMER’S DAY - To highlight the impacts of dementia, affecting over 7,500 people in Luxembourg, the country’s Alzheimer’s Association has announced its 22nd ‘Memory Walk’, which will take place in the capital tomorrow. The walk is aimed at spreading knowledge and understanding about the disease as well as providing moments of joy and connection for those affected.

UNGA BETTEL - Prime Minister Xavier Bettel is giving a speech at the UN General Assembly in New York today. This morning’s sessions also include speeches by Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Ukrainian President Zelensky already spoke at the opening on Tuesday, and asked the international community for further help in the war against Russia. President Biden met Zelensky at the White House yesterday and confirmed more weapons and equipment from US military stock, worth more than $300 million. Today, Zelensky continues his journey to Canada, where he will address the parliament in Ottawa.

CHARLES FRANCE - King Charles III is putting the environment at the heart of the final day of his state visit to France, learning about climate-induced wildfires and visiting a sustainable vineyard near Bordeaux. Charles, accompanied by his wife Queen Camilla, 76, had been due to visit in March but civil unrest over unpopular pension reforms forced the trip to be postponed at the last minute.

MURDOCH RETIREMENT - Rupert Murdoch has announced he will step down as chairman of his global media empire and hand control over to his son Lachlan. The Australian-born mogul, who built a global entertainment and news juggernaut will step back at the age of 92, starting mid-November. Fox and News Corp own newspapers including The Sun, The Times and the Wall Street Journal as well as the Fox News TV channel.

NASA ASTEROID - NASA’s first mission to retrieve an asteroid sample and return it to US soil is expected to reach a finale on Sunday with a descent into the Utah desert. Scientists hope the material -- possibly the most ever retrieved by such a mission -- will provide humanity with a better understanding on the formation of our solar system and how Earth became habitable. Touchdown is scheduled for Sunday at around 9am local time (1500 GMT).

CYCLING - The 2nd stage of the Tour de Luxembourg was won yesterday in Mamer in the sprint by Belgian cyclist Jenthe Biermans. The Arkea pro was able to beat Sören Kragh-Andersen from Denmark, who is the new general leader. Alex Kirsch came in 6th place and is also 5th overall and so the best Luxembourger in the race so far. Today on Friday, the queen stage is on the programme. It goes over 168km from Mertert to Vianden, with the arrival at Vianden castle.

FOOTBALL - The group phase in the European and in the Conference League started yesterday. There were no big surprises. Ajax and Marseille drew 3-3, Union St Gilloise and Anthony Moris drew 1-1 with Toulouse, Freiburg won 3-2 against Piraeus and Frankfurt beat Aberdeen 2-1.

FORMULA 1 - This weekend is the Grand Prix of Suzuka in Japan. Max Verstappen went fastest this morning in the first practice. Red Bull’s Verstappen was first out onto the Suzuka track in dry but humid conditions. He reeled off a quickest lap of 1min 31.647sec -- 0.626sec faster than second-place Carlos Sainz of Ferrari, who won last weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix.

Weather

After a cool start of around 11°C, the sun will eventually pop out from behind the clouds in the morning and temperatures will rise slowly to a peak of around 16°C by lunchtime. It’s then back to the all too familiar rain, wind, and possibly thunder as the clouds gather again. Temperatures will only reach highs of 15-16°C.
