The judicial administration confirmed Wednesday that former Defence Minister François Bausch and former Army Chief Alain Duschène will not face criminal prosecution for the fatal 2019 Waldhof shell explosion.

Luxembourg's former Minister of Defence, François Bausch, and former Army Chief of Staff, Alain Duschène, will not face criminal prosecution for the 2019 shell explosion at the Waldhof military camp. The decision was confirmed by the judicial administration on Wednesday, closing a case that stemmed from the incident which left two dead and two injured.

In a press statement, the administration explained that the investigation found no evidence that Bausch and Duschène were aware of the specific circumstances of the demining operation where the blast occurred. While they were informed of general security issues at the camp, the administration stated that the two men "did not concretely contribute to the occurrence of the accident".

Consequently, the acts of which they were accused "are not subject to a criminal classification", formally ending the proceedings.
