Luxembourg
BENELUX SUMMIT – Today is the Benelux Summit, chaired by Luxembourg. Prime Minister Luc Frieden will receive his counterparts from Belgium and the Netherlands at Bourglinster Castle. The talks with Bart de Wever and Dick Schoof will focus on trade and sustainable development within the Benelux region.
ING LAYOFFS – According to RTL information, 124 people are to be laid off at ING – a figure confirmed by the banking union ALEBA. ING announced last year that it was withdrawing from retail banking but said then that it did not intend to cut jobs. The newest layoffs seem to concern retail banking positions, and though these will happen under a social plan, the start date for those negotiations is yet to be determined.
SCHUEBERFOUER ENDS – The Schueberfouer will come to a close tonight at 10pm with a large fireworks display affecting traffic around the Glacis. Access to Limpertsberg via Boulevard Robert Schuman, coming from the Red Bridge, will be closed to traffic between 8pm and 11.30pm. However, Limpertsberg will remain accessible via Rue Albert Unden and Avenue de la Faïencerie from Rollingergrund.
World
FRANCE PROTESTS – France's new Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu takes office today facing a day of protests that are expected to see transport, education, and other services suffer disruptions in a show of anger against President Macron and the tense financial situation in France. 80,000 police officers have been mobilised. The protests will also cause problems for air and train traffic with an impact on Luxembourg connections. Passengers are best advised to contact Luxairport, Luxair, and CFL for information.
POLAND DOWNS DRONES – Poland says it has scrambled its own and NATO air defences this morning to shoot down drone type objects in response to repeated violations of the country’s airspace during a Russian attack on Ukraine. This is the first time that a NATO member has attempted to shoot down invading drones since the start of the war in Ukraine.
STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS – EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will deliver her fifth State of the Union address before the European Parliament in Strasbourg today. She is expected to take stock of her work and set out goals for the next working year. The main topics will be the competitiveness of the EU, the Ukraine war, and European defence.
QATAR AIRSTRIKE – Israel attempted to kill the political leaders of Hamas with an airstrike on Qatar yesterday, killing six people. Hamas says five of its members died but they did not include the top leaders. The strike on the capital Doha has not only been condemned by Qatar but also internationally. US President Trump said he was “very unhappy about every aspect” of the Israel strike.
EU FOOD WASTE – The EU has approved new legislation setting binding targets to cut food waste by 2030 and introducing stricter rules for the fast-fashion industry. Countries will have to slash food waste generated by households, retailers, and restaurants by 30% as well as 10% of waste generated by food processing and manufacturing. The textile industry has new obligations, with producers required to foot the bill for collecting, sorting, and recycling clothing as well as everything from carpets to mattresses.
Sport
FOOTBALL – Starting with football and some results from last night’s World Cup qualifiers: France beat Iceland 2-1, Portugal won 3-2 against Hungary and England demolished Serbia 5-0.
In the U21 Euro qualification matches, Luxembourg lost 1-0 to the Faroe Islands.
ATHLETICS – Noah Lyles and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone lead the US medal charge at the world championships in Tokyo that get under way on Saturday while Armand Duplantis is expected to cement his legacy as the greatest pole vaulter in history.
Weather
Expect a misty start to the morning, giving way to overcast skies by the afternoon. There may be scattered showers from midday, as well as light rain overnight. Temperatures are a little warmer than yesterday, starting off at a chilly 7–9°C in the morning, before rising to highs of 20–22°C in the afternoon.
