LUXEMBOURG FARMERS BATTLE FALLING PRICES – After a disappointing harvest in 2024, Luxembourg's farmers are reporting better yields this year, with the agricultural cooperative Verband estimating an increase of 10 to 20 percent. The Verband states that wheat production is expected at six to eight tonnes per hectare compared with last year's poor results, and the quality of bread wheat has generally been good. But farmers remain concerned: grain prices are hovering around €14 per 100 kilos, a level not seen since the 1980s, while production costs have tripled over the last four decades, meaning many are selling at a loss, explained Serge Turmes, Director-General of the Verband.

LUXTRUST TECHNICAL GLITCH – Luxtrust has confirmed that a technical problem affected the Luxtrust-Scan on Wednesday afternoon. After a reader alerted us to problems with Luxtrust’s scan function, the IT company confirmed to RTL that a technical issue was affecting its services. Luxtrust said the cause was under investigation but ruled out a DDoS cyberattack. The company stressed that not all systems were affected and that client data and transactions remained secure.

KIRCHBERG MAN ARRESTED FOR NORWAY ABUSE – On Tuesday, an 80-year-old man was tracked down and arrested in Kirchberg thanks to cooperation between Luxembourgish and Norwegian police. The man had been sentenced in Norway to eight years in prison for the sexual abuse of his own child. He is now being held in pre-trial detention in Luxembourg before being transferred back to Norway. The arrest was made possible with the support of the European Network of Fugitive Active Search Teams (ENFAST).

World

MINNESOTA SCHOOL SHOOTING – Investigators are seeking to find out why a heavily-armed shooter opened fire on school children at a church service in Minneapolis on Wednesday, killing two pupils and wounding 17 people in the latest violent tragedy to jolt the United States. City police chief Brian O'Hara said that the attacker sprayed bullets through the windows of the Annunciation Church as dozens of young students were at a Mass marking their first week back at school.

CHINA TO HOST NON-WESTERN SUMMIT – China's President Xi Jinping will host world leaders including Russia's Vladimir Putin and India's Narendra Modi from Sunday for a summit before a huge military parade as he seeks to showcase a non-Western style of regional collaboration. The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit will be held Sunday and Monday, days before the military parade in nearby Beijing to mark 80 years since the end of World War II, which North Korea's Kim Jong Un will attend.

UN SECURITY COUNCIL TO VOTE ON LEBANON PEACEKEEPERS – The UN Security Council is set to vote Thursday on the future of the blue helmet peacekeeping mission in south Lebanon, which has faced US and Israeli opposition. Some 10,800 peacekeepers have been acting as a buffer between Israel and Lebanon since 1978. But the usual renewal of their mandate, which expires Sunday, is facing hostility this year from Israel and its American ally, who want them to leave.

ISRAEL UPS PRESSURE AS TRUMP TALKS POST-WAR PLAN – The Israeli military pressed operations around Gaza City on Wednesday as US President Donald Trump hosted a meeting on post-war plans for the shattered Palestinian territory. Israel is under mounting pressure both at home and abroad to end its almost two-year campaign in Gaza, where the United Nations has declared a famine. No details emerged from the gathering, which Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff had earlier promised would be "large meeting".

TENNIS – Defending US Open champion Aryna Sabalenka says she is "a better player and person" than the one who lost to Leylah Fernandez four years ago as they prepare for a re-run of their 2021 semi-final. Sabalenka overcame a spirited challenge from unseeded Russian Polina Kudermetova to advance to the third round in New York on Wednesday.

Jelena Ostapenko was involved in a furious on-court confrontation with Taylor Townsend after being dumped out of the US Open by the unseeded American on Wednesday. Latvian 25th seed Ostapenko unleashed an angry verbal volley at Townsend following her 7-5, 6-1 second-round defeat. Townsend later revealed that Ostapenko had accused her of lacking "class" during her tirade.

FOOTBALLLionel Messi scored twice late on as Inter Miami fought back to beat Orlando City 3-1 and reach the final of the Leagues Cup on Wednesday. After missing two straight matches with a right thigh injury, Messi converted a penalty in the 77th minute to pull Inter level at 1-1 then combined with Jordi Alba to put the hosts ahead in the 88th. Telasco Segovia added a third in injury time as Miami returned to the final of the Leagues Cup, the cross-border competition featuring teams from Major League Soccer and Mexico's Liga-MX.
