Two people have died following the crash of a small aircraft onto a motorway near Brescia, in northern Italy.

A surveillance camera captured chilling footage of the moment the plane struck a busy motorway near Azzano Mella, in the province of Brescia. The incident occurred on Tuesday, 22 July, when a microlight aircraft suddenly nosedived and burst into flames.

Thick black smoke rose into the sky at around 12.19pm, with some vehicles coming to a stop while others cautiously continued driving.

An incident report from the Aviation Safety Network states that a microlight aircraft crashed onto a motorway connecting the A4 and A21, near the town of Azzano Mella in the province of Brescia.

Upon impact, the aircraft immediately caught fire. Both occupants were killed instantly. The flames also spread to two passing vehicles, injuring two people. Another individual sustained injuries and was transported to hospital for treatment.

Emergency crews worked quickly to extinguish the blaze and secure the area, which sustained extensive damage due to a fuel leak and scattered debris.

The remains of the aircraft’s occupants were recovered from the cockpit and later identified by local media as Sergio Ravaglia, a 75-year-old lawyer, and Anna Maria De Stefano, aged 50.

Italian authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
