LABOUR NEGOTIATIONS – The government on Wednesday evening convened with union leaders and employers, marking the first high-level talks since trade unions mobilised thousands in protest two weeks ago. Union representatives reiterated their firm opposition to any weakening of collective bargaining agreements before entering discussions. Their stance directly challenges proposed reforms that would allow companies to negotiate certain workforce terms without union involvement.

HEALTHCARE – Lawmakers have approved a measure abolishing the mandatory "reflection period" previously required before an abortion. However, the legal time frame for abortion – currently set at 12 weeks of pregnancy – remains unchanged. Among its provisions, the bill also bans virginity certificates and hymenorrhaphy, practices that have drawn criticism for perpetuating gender-based harm.

DIFFERDANGE SELLS TOWN HALL FURNISHINGS – The municipality of Differdange has launched an innovative initiative to clear its historic town hall ahead of planned renovations, offering the building's furnishings and fixtures for public purchase with all proceeds benefiting local charities.

FLF AND HOLTZ PART WAYS – The Luxembourg Football Federation (FLF) announced Wednesday that Luc Holtz will conclude his tenure as the men's national team coach when his contract expires on 31 December 2025. Following what the federation described as a "thorough analysis", both the FLF administration and Holtz mutually agreed not to extend the contract.

MAJOR FIRE ESCH-SUR-ALZETTEA major fire broke out on Wednesday in a hall located on Rue de Belval in Esch-sur-Alzette, prompting a large emergency response. Firefighters from Esch, Kayl, Rumelange, Pétange, and Luxembourg City were deployed after the blaze started around 5pm.

World

USA – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet with his Russian counterpart in Malaysia on Thursday, after Moscow unleashed its second major attack on Ukraine in as many days. Rubio's first visit to Asia as secretary of state also comes as US President Donald Trump ramps up his trade war, threatening more than 20 countries with punitive tariffs.

EU – EU chief Ursula von der Leyen faces a no confidence vote Thursday that has little chance of succeeding but has exposed frictions between her backers and complaints about her leadership style. Addressing parliament this week, von der Leyen dismissed the no-confidence supporters as "anti-vaxxers" and Russian President Vladimir "Putin apologists".

UK – French President Emmanuel Macron wraps up a three-day state visit to Britain on Thursday with a summit aiming to "reboot" defence ties with a focus on joint missile development and nuclear co-operation. Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer are also expected to discuss maintaining support for Ukraine and curbing undocumented cross-Channel immigration.

Sport

RUGBY – Japans head coach Eddie Jones said Japan has a "chance to create history" as they came from behind to beat the Welsh 24-19 in Kitakyushu last weekend. They are now looking to claim consecutive wins over a Tier One country for the first time. "Japan has never had a record of beating a top-tier team back-to-back so we've got a chance to create history", Jones said.

FOOTBALL – Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique savoured his team's performance in blowing away Real Madrid on Wednesday to reach the Club World Cup final. Two goals from Fabian Ruiz either side of a Dembele strike, as well as a late effort from substitute Ramos, gave PSG an emphatic 4-0 semi-final victory. "It is a beautiful victory and we are happy to be in the final", Enrique stated after the game.

TENNIS – Novak Djokovic set up a mouthwatering Wimbledon semi-final against world number one Jannik Sinner as he moved a step closer to claiming a historic 25th Grand Slam title. The Serb won 6-7 (6/8), 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 against Flavio Cobolli in front of Britain's Queen Camilla on Wednesday.
