Luxembourg
HEATWAVE – Meteolux has issued an orange heat alert for today, with temperatures expected to reach up to 35°C across Luxembourg. The alert is in effect from 12pm to 9pm. Temperatures are expected to peak on Wednesday, with another orange alert in place and leading some schools in Mertert and Schengen to cancel or limit classes for the safety of their pupils and teachers. At this time, the mayor of Luxembourg City has confirmed that they are not considering giving pupils a day off in the capital. A meeting assessing the severe weather risk involving the Education Ministry is taking place this morning.
UNION TALKS – The trade unions OGBL and LCGB have accepted the prime minister's invitation for a social roundtable on 9 July, where they will discuss pension reform, Sunday work, collective agreements, and the minimum wage.
POLICE BODYCAMS – Every police officer in Luxembourg will wear a body camera, as part of a nationwide rollout aimed at boosting accountability and protecting both officers and the public. If the camera footage is not used by the authorities, it is retained for 28 days before being automatically and permanently deleted.
FRIEDEN IN BERLIN – Prime Minister Luc Frieden is in Berlin today to meet German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The purpose of the visit will be to highlight the close bilateral relations between Luxembourg and Germany, and to discuss topical European and international issues
World
EUROPE HEATWAVE – The heatwave is taking its toll across Europe. Paris is on red alert for high temperatures today, with the top of the Eiffel Tower shut, polluting traffic banned, and speed restrictions in place. According to the Meteo France weather agency, temperatures could reach 36–40°C with peaks of 41°C in some areas. Portugal will see some respite today after two days on red alert in several regions, including Lisbon, and warnings will be downgraded to orange alert in all but eight areas inland. In Turkey, rescuers evacuated more than 50,000 people threatened by a string of wildfires, most from the western province of Izmir, where winds of 120 kilometres per hour fanned the blazes. Greece has also been tackling wildfires.
DENMARK EU PRESIDENCY – Denmark takes over the EU Presidency today. According to Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Denmark will use its six-month turn at the helm of the EU to push member states to ramp up defence spending and tackle illegal migration.
GAZA WAR – Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli forces have killed at least 51 people, including 24 at a seafront café as fresh calls grow for a ceasefire in the war-ravaged Palestinian territory. According to White House officials, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will visit the White House on 7 July.
FRANCE SMOKING BAN – France is banning smoking in all outdoor places that can be accessed by children from today, including beaches, parks, and bus stops. The new ban also extends to schools to stop students smoking in front of buildings. Offenders face a fine of up to €135. However, the ban will not extend to France's iconic cafe terraces while electronic cigarettes, which have boomed in France in recent years, are also not covered.
Sport
TENNIS – Carlos Alcaraz survived a major scare in his Wimbledon opener yesterday while Aryna Sabalenka kept her cool to progress on the hottest opening day in the tournament's history.
Today, Novak Djokovic launches his latest bid for a record 25th Grand Slam singles crown at Wimbledon while men's top seed Jannik Sinner makes his entrance, playing against Luca Nardi in the first round. Defending women's champion Barbora Krejcikova faces Alexandra Eala on Tuesday.
FOOTBALL – Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal stunned Manchester City with a dramatic 4-3 extra-time win at the Club World Cup, pulling off one of Middle Eastern football's biggest upsets and knocking the European champions out of the tournament. And Fluminense have knocked Inter Milan out with a 2-0 win, booking a quarter-final clash against Al Hilal. Today, Real Madrid are playing against Juventus.
Weather
It will be a clear and sunny day. As expected from an orange alert, temperatures will be quite high: they start around 22–24°C, and will just keep going up until it reaches around 35°C in the afternoon.
