A rockslide on a busy road in Trier on Thursday morning led to road closures and traffic delays, with experts working to clear the debris and investigate the cause.
On Thursday morning, a rockslide disrupted traffic on a key transport route into Trier, causing significant delays. The incident occurred at around 11am on Bitburger Straße (B51) in the western direction, just after the intersection with the Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge.
Photos shared by the Trier municipality show rocks scattered across the road near a typically busy bus stop. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Trier municipal authorities announced the complete closure of Bonner Straße to traffic. Experts are currently on-site to remove the debris and secure the remaining rockface to prevent further incidents.
According to the newspaper Trierischer Volksfreund, the affected section of Bitburger Straße (B51) is closed in one direction, with police managing traffic flow. The route toward the city, leading down the B51 onto the Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge, reportedly remains open. However, the rockslide has caused widespread traffic disruptions, forcing several bus routes to be rerouted.
While the exact cause of the rockslide is still under investigation, recent frost and heavy rainfall are believed to have played a role. A geologist was present at the scene on Thursday morning to assess the situation.
