WINTER  WEATHER - A flood alert remains in place on the Moselle until this afternoon. The river’s water levels have risen by another 10cm since yesterday evening, but have meanwhile stabilised to 440cm at the Remich gauge and 530cm in Grevenmacher.

After the strong winds yesterday afternoon, the country’s rescue services received no less than 400 calls.  65 fallen trees had to be cleared from roads and fire services were called out 19 times because of fallen trees on roofs. There were no major incidents or injuries.

FRIEDEN SPEECH - Prime Minister Luc Frieden is holding a speech on the challenges facing Europe at the CSU's annual conference in Bavaria today. On the fringes of this meeting, Frieden will also have a bilateral discussion with the CDU-CSU's lead candidate in the upcoming Bundestag elections, Friedrich Merz. The talks will focus on the most important European policy issues in the coming months.

RENT CAP - Housing minister Claude Meisch told RTL yesterday that a rent cap is needed across the country but that it’s not the right time now to implement a rent cap. He said that in the current uncertain economic climate, the main priority is for investors in the housing market, "otherwise, we won't have the necessary supply of housing".

PARLIAMENT WORKLOAD - In response to a rising workload and fuller agenda, the Chamber of Deputies will begin holding plenary sessions in the morning, and not just at noon. President of the Chamber, Claude Wiseler, highlighted the increasing challenges faced by the Chamber, noting that the volume and complexity of legislative texts have grown significantly in recent years, requiring more time and careful deliberation.

World

CHARLIE HEBDO - France is set to mark 10 years since an Islamist attack on the Charlie Hebdo newspaper that shocked the country and led to fierce debate about freedom of expression and religion. President Emmanuel Macron and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo are set to lead commemorations of the attack, which killed twelve people.

TIBET EARTHQUAKE - A powerful earthquake in China's remote Tibet region has killed at least  53 people and collapsed "many buildings". According to Chinese state media tremors were also felt in neighbouring Nepal's capital Kathmandu and parts of India.

TRUMP SENTENCING - A New York judge has rejected US President-elect Donald Trump's request to delay sentencing set for later this week in his hush money case. Trump was convicted in May of 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover up a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels on the eve of the 2016 election to stop her from revealing an alleged sexual encounter.

CANADA TRUDEAU - Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation, saying he would leave office as soon as his party chooses a new leader. After more than nine years in power, Trudeau's support within the ruling Liberal party began crumbling last year, due to intensifying public criticism focused on the rising cost of living.

SKI JUMPING - Austrian ski-jumper Daniel Tschofenig has snatched overall victory in the prestigious Four Hills tournament with a dramatic win in Bischofshofen yesterday. But the 22-year-old Tschofenig pulled off the biggest success of his career, scoring 1,194.4 points to finish 1.4 ahead of Jan Hoerl with Kraft third at 4.1 for an Austrian podium sweep. https://today.rtl.lu/sport/international/a/2264829.html

DAKAR RALLY - The legendary Dakar Rally has returned to Saudi Arabia for its 2025 edition. South African Henk Lategan tops the overall standings, 4min 45sec ahead with Qatar's five-time winner Nasser al-Attiyah in third place. Meanwhile, defending champion Carlos Sainz is out. After an accident on Sunday and technical problems yesterday, the Spaniard had to give up. The Dakar runs until the 17th of January.

BASKETBALL - Giannis Antetokounmpo posted his fourth triple-double of the season and Damian Lillard scored 25 points to lead the Milwaukee Bucks to a 128-104 NBA victory over the Toronto Raptors on Monday.

Weather

After a windy and rainy Monday that brought a risk of flooding, today’s weather offers some relief. However, a yellow alert remains in effect until 4pm, for the southern regions, particularly the Moselle area. It's a colder day, starting off chilly with temperatures ranging from 2-3 °C and winds of 55km/h expected. As temperatures drop, Tuesday and Wednesday could see light snowfall across the Grand Duchy.
