Luxembourg

PRESIDENT VISIT - German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife have arrived for an official visit to Luxembourg. They will be welcomed by Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa with an official reception ceremony in front of the Grand Ducal Palace this morning.

A joint talk and a wreath-laying ceremony at the National Monument of Luxembourg will be followed by meetings with the President of Parliament Fernand Etgen, Prime Minister Xavier Bettel and Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn. Later they will visit the National Archives, the Chamber and the national rescue service centre in Gasperich. And to end the first day of the visit, there is a state banquet in the palace in the evening.

ELECTIONS - Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) have approved Minister of Health Paulette Lenert as their lead candidate for the parliamentary elections in October. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party, the DP has unveiled its campaign promises at a party congress in Roodt-sur-Syre over the weekend. Housing and childcare services are the top priorities for the party.

ROBBIE CONCERT - Robbie Williams is set to take the stage for a much anticipated concert at Lux Expo for 2 nights, starting tonight. The current tour is set to be a joyous celebration of Robbie’s 25 years as a solo artist following the release of his album, ‘XXV’, which features many of his greatest hits and fan favourites from across his career. There are still tickets available for tonight’s show (at time of writing).

World

CHINA ATTACK - Six people have been killed and one wounded in an attack at a kindergarten in south China's Guangdong province. Police say the victims include one teacher, two parents and three students. There is no information about the  identities and age of the victims, nor on the weapon used in the attack. China strictly prohibits citizens from owning firearms, and there has been a spate of stabbings in recent years.

BIDEN UK - President Biden will hold talks with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the King later today. He is on a brief visit to the UK, ahead of a NATO summit in Lithuania tomorrow. The backdrop is one of public difference over Washington’s decision to supply what are known as cluster bombs to Ukraine. The UK is one of over 120 countries to sign a convention, banning their use.

NATO SUMMIT - In the run-up to the summit, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is meeting Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Turkish President Erdogan today. This is because Turkey is still against a Swedish accession to the military alliance. Turkey blocked it because PKK rebels were granted asylum in Sweden, which the Turkish authorities consider to be terrorists.

MISSING BOY - A major search operation is underway in Vernet, in the French Alps. A two-year-old boy has been missing since Saturday night. The boy was with his grandparents, when he disappeared from the village. Around 100 police officers and firefighters were searching for the child with dogs and drones yesterday. The search continues.

Sports

TENNIS - At Wimbledon, World number one Iga Swiatek beat Olympic champion Belinda Bencic 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/2), 6-3 on Centre Court. Over on Court One, Ukraine's Elina Svitolina came from a set and break down to defeat Belarusian rival Victoria Azarenka 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (11/9).

Novak Djokovic took a two sets lead over Hubert Hurkacz in their last 16 clash when play was halted ahead of a 11pm night-time curfew. Djokovic, playing his 100th match at the tournament, was 7-6 (8/6), 7-6 (8/6) ahead against the Pole. The pair will resume today with the winner to face Andrey Rublev for a place in the semi-finals.

CYCLING - Today is a rest day in the Tour de France. The 9th stage yesterday was won by the Canadian cyclist Michael Woods. Jonas Vingegaard remains holds on to the overall lead. The best Luxembourger is Bob Jungels, currently in  35th place.

FORMULA 1 - Max Verstappen has won the British Grand Prix, ahead of Lando Norris at McLaren and Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton. It was his sixth win in succession, his eighth in 10 races and the 43rd of his career.

Weather

Yesterday's wind, rain, and thunder is behind us as the sun makes a return. While it will be nice and warm, temperatures will be dropping a bit as compared to the last couple of days. We can expect a partially cloudy day with only a light breeze, and no rain. Temperatures start off mild at 17-20°C in the morning, rising to highs of around 26-28°C in the afternoon.
