New data from Eurostat, the EU's statistics service, show that Luxembourg and Hungary have the lowest proportion of women scientists and engineers in the Union.

The data show that 25% of scientists and engineers in Luxembourg are women, a figure which places us at the bottom of the list of EU countries. The overall average in the union is 41% — a full 16 percentage points above Luxembourg and Hungary.

At the top of the list are Lithuania with 57%, followed by Bulgaria (53%), Latvia (53%), Portugal (51%), and Denmark (50%).

The data used is from 2017, and the only previous data available in the set is from 2016, when Luxembourg’s figure stood at 24.78% (compared to a more precise figure of 25.49% in 2017).
