In our "Safety First" series, we introduce you to various terms that you should be familiar with in your daily internet use.

Deepfakes are manipulated media content generated by Artificial Intelligence, taking the form of what can be highly realistic photos, videos, or audio. This technology is increasingly used to alter or imitate voices to spread disinformation

While it is sometimes still possible to identify manipulated content visually or audibly, deepfake technology is advancing rapidly. As AI systems grow more sophisticated and make fewer errors, distinguishing these fabrications from authentic media is becoming increasingly difficult.

In any case, it is advisable not to accept everything online at face value. Proactive steps include using fact-checking websites to verify if content has already been debunked and cross-referencing subjects from social media feeds with coverage from reputable news outlets that adhere to journalistic standards.
