Drought during sanitary crisisWill Luxembourg's water reserves be sufficient for the coming summer months?

RTL Today
The current spell of great, sunny weather has been a welcoming surprise to help people through the lockdown. But the lack of rain since spring may pose problems.

Even though the winter months have been filled with precipitation, they have not been able to replenish Luxembourg's water reserves fully. The current sanitary crisis has increased private water uses throughout the country.

About 50% of the Grand Duchy's potable water reserves stem from the barrier lake in Esch-sur-Sûre. At the moment, said reserves are considered sufficient to make it through the coming summer months.

During a normal year, many of the country's residents go on holiday over the month of August. The ongoing pandemic will prevent this from happening, increasing water use in Luxembourg and putting strain on the national water reserves.

Jean-Paul Lickes, director of the water management office, explains: "We are monitoring construction sites to allow more rainwater to trickle through the ground. Apart from such measures, we are in constant dialogue with Luxembourg's communities to check on our reserves."
