Cycling in winterWhy good working lights on a bike are important

To ensure you can see and are seen in the dark, you should check the lights on your bike before winter. Here are some useful tips from Provëlo.

The dark days of winter can be particularly dangerous for cyclists. Yves Meyer from Provëlo explains how you can ensure you are seen - and heard - on the bike.

“The idea is for everyone to be able to cycle as fast, and as safely as possible. One of the things you need to check on your bike is correct lighting to ensure you will be seen in the cold, wet and dark weather. You need to be aware you are more vulnerable on the bike, so we want people to take care that drivers can see them and be attentive to them.”

To this end, Provëlo offered free checks of bike lights at Rond-Point Schumann on Limpertsberg.

“We check that their lights adhere to the Highway Code. This means: a continuous white light in front and a continuous red light in the rear. The Highway Code allows any additional light on top of that, and we encourage this to increase safety.”

In addition to lights, you can wear high viz gear with reflective materials, such as a vest. You can add reflective or blinking gadgets to your bike or other accessories, such as the helmet. You can also use your bell to make people aware of your presence, such as pedestrians.

Despite all precautions, you should constantly be aware that you may not be seen. Of course, motorists are also encouraged to be particularly vigilant and look out for vulnerable road users, says Yves Meyer.
