As hunting season resumesWhat to do in the event of a wildlife-vehicle collision?

RTL Today
'Drive hunting season', in which hunters flush out game from Luxembourg's woods, begins on Saturday 14 October and ends on 17 December. Here are some safety guidelines to keep in mind throughout these months.

During hunting season, the risk of a wildlife collision increases as animals are inadvertently driven towards nearby roads. The Ministry of Mobility, in collaboration with Luxembourg’s road safety association and hunting federation, reminds drivers and walkers to exercise vigilance during this time.

Motorists are advised to maintain a watchful eye on the sides of the road, especially when driving through the forest. Areas with signs warning of wildlife should be noted: these signs are an indication that drivers should adapt their speed accordingly. If you come across a wild animal on the road: slow down, use your horn and turn on your low-beam headlights. Be mindful of your light intensity which can disturb other motorists as well as animals, which often travel in packs.

If a collision cannot be prevented, drivers are advised to avoid swerving and instead maintain a firm grip on the steering wheel, brake firmly, and maintain the vehicle’s trajectory. In the event the vehicle does collide with a deer or wild boar, motorists should stop their car, put on their yellow vest, arrange their emergency triangle and notify the police (at telephone number 113).

It is strongly advised not to handle or move an injured or dead animal. Law enforcement will take charge of the situation or contact the relevant services.

Pedestrians are also advised to exercise caution when walking in the woods during hunting season. A planned hunt should always be accompanied by adequate signage warning pedestrians to avoid the area. In addition, pedestrians can keep abreast of which hunting locations to avoid at geoportail.lu.
