The letter was written by MP Francine Closener from the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) and the president of the LSAP's eastern section, Ben Streff.

The two politicians stress that since the start of the pandemic, society has asked a lot, even too much, of children and adolescents. On top of burdening them with a partial responsibility for the well-being of their parents and grand-parents, young people are also the last to be vaccinated and thus the last to regain their personal liberties, Closener and Streff point out.

The LSAP politicians demand more respect for the youngest members of society, who have shown great solidarity by sacrificing a whole year of their lives and putting their "personal development, freedom, and joy of living" on the back burner. They have gone to great lengths to protect their parents, grand-parents, and other people, the authors stress.

Closener and Streff also make it very clear, however, that their letter is not meant as an approval or encouragement of "corona parties", similar to those recently seen in the capital's municipal park Kinnekswiss. In fact, in the eyes of the politicians, these acts of a minority of young people are only to the detriment of those who had hoped to regain "a shred of happiness" in the near future.
