The LeftWe are a party of long-term solutions, argues Nathalie Oberweis

In conversation with RTL, the Left's Nathalie Oberweis made a case for why her party is focused on fighting the root causes of problems rather treating short-term symptoms in light of the upcoming elections this year.

‘We are entering the race as a team’

The Left considers it problematic that some parties focus more on people than policies. This is one of the reasons why the party has implemented a rotation system by which they change MPs halfway through the legislative period.

‘Prohibiting begging means criminalising people’

The Left is critical of the day-time begging ban that the municipality of Luxembourg City recently set in motion. MP Oberweis argued that prohibiting begging is fighting a symptom, not the root of the problem.

The politician further argued that poverty and inequality should be counteracted in long-term manner to ensure that fewer people end up living in the street or become addicted to drugs. According to MP Oberweis, one avenue with potential is the Housing First concept, which is designed to fight homelessness and support people with medical issues.

‘We are not a party of easy and populist ideas’

The Left has consistently grown over the past two years. Since mid 2021, Nathalie Oberweis has been one of two women representing the party in the Chamber of Deputies. She has been a member of the Left for six years and is known for her strong stance on growing inequalities.

Oberweis, a former freelance journalist who studied political science, will once again run in both the municipal and legislative elections this year. However, she has not officially been named lead candidate for the Left.
