The committee had filed the request on Tuesday, seeking to organise a referendum on the revision of Chapter VI of the Grand Duchy’s constitution. On Thursday evening, Xavier Bettel declared the request admissible.

The proposals for constitutional reform cover reforms to the justice system; rights and freedoms; and the organisation of the government, Chamber of Deputies and State Council.

Signatures will be collected no later than 15 days after the official publication in the journal. Once the period for signatures has elapsed, each municipality will send the results to the Ministry of State. A total of 25,000 signatures will be required - should this threshold be reached, a referendum will be organised within six months.

The Chamber of Deputies debated the topic of constitutional reform over the past week. The CSV party, who blocked plans for a referendum in 2019, said they would revise their stance if 25,000 signatures could be amassed.
