Public transport staff bear the brunt of the attacks, with 121 cases of aggression against employees on Luxembourg’s trains in 2021. Although this was a slight decrease when compared to 2020, staff on buses and trams were harassed twice as much as in 2020, with 60 cases reported in total.
Passengers have also reported increasing rates of violence, with 82 cases observed in 2020, and 38 cases in the first three months of 2022 alone.
The statement from the Ministry of Mobility said that the rise in attacks could be traced back to the onset of coronavirus and subsequent safety measures, such as the mask requirement on public transport.
The authorities are said to be looking into measures to counteract the risk of violence and aggression towards staff, with options such as protective cabins for bus drivers. The Ministry is working on solutions with the bus companies, but the cost could prove an issue, concluded the statement.
