HesperangeVerdict in embezzlement trial to be announced on Thursday

RTL Today
Two former municipal employees and a businessman stand accused of having embezzled €5.2 million from the municipality of Hesperange. The verdict in the court case will be announced on Thursday.

At the end of the trial, the prosecution recommended an eight-year prison sentence for the main defendant, half of which to be suspended. A sentence of five years and six months in prison, half of which should also be suspended, was recommended for the technician. The businessman should receive a fully suspended prison sentence of 18 months, the prosecution further argued.

The allegations of embezzlement reach back as far as the year 2000.

The matter came to light in the summer of 2019 after insurance payments were not transferred to the municipality’s accounts. The investigation revealed that funds had been transferred to other accounts that were not connected to the local administration, resulting in the municipality immediately filing a complaint for embezzlement. Two municipal employees confessed.
