Last week, following the tripartite meeting, indexation was postponed. Indexation is done by adjusting wages to keep purchasing power in balance.
The ULC statement enlists a variety of concerning issues: spending power, index adaptations, the burden of the middle class, and policies that keep moving further away from what really worries people. ULC president Nico Hoffmann thinks that the postponing of the indexation will create a situation where support always comes too late.
The statement also describes the government’s offer to reduce petrol prices by 7.5 cents as “ridiculous”. ULC argues that a revision of the tax system is more effective, including an adjustment to inflation, an increase of non-taxable fees, a limit on energy prices, as well a suspension of the CO2 tax.
