Police officers stopped a car with two occupants for a routine check in the Esch-sur-Alzette area on Tuesday evening. A strong smell of cannabis was coming from the vehicle, prompting officers to carry out an on-the-spot drugs test, which the driver failed. Further searching the car, police discovered several grams of drugs.
While police were still in the process of checking the vehicle and its occupants, the situation suddenly escalated. Without warning, the driver sped off, forcing two officers to jump aside to avoid being hit by the fleeing car, according to the police report.
A large-scale search was immediately launched, involving traffic police units, a canine unit, and a police helicopter. Despite these efforts, the driver initially managed to evade capture.
Shortly afterwards, not far from where the check had taken place, police did not find the suspect but they did come across a bag containing around 25 grams of hashish and a significant amount of cash. The driver, who had abandoned his vehicle and was on foot, was later apprehended. The second occupant of the car was also located a short time after.
The car used by the suspects was seized, and the driver received an immediate driving ban. Police have launched further investigations and a formal report has been drawn up.
Police also reported a similar incident earlier that evening, although without an attempted escape. At around 7pm, officers conducting a traffic check on Marburgerstrooss in Marnach stopped a driver whose vehicle also smelled strongly of cannabis. Officers found and seized a small quantity of hashish, and a report was filed.
