In his function as leader of the Chamber’s foreign affairs commission, LSAP MP Cruchten undertook a trip to Kyiv last week. At the moment, Ukrainian officials regularly invite politicians from different countries to assess the situation on the ground and negotiate further support measures.
Cruchten elaborated that the trip had been kept secret and that they travelled to the Ukrainian capital by train since there are no planes making the trip at the moment: “We travelled with normal trains that take very long and are not as comfortable as what we are used to. However, I cannot be pedantic, people down there have very different problems.”
The LSAP politician emphasised that Ukraine is not only fighting for its own freedom, but also for that of the entire West. If this had not been clear up until now, it has become so after Russian President Putin annexed four Ukrainian regions and issued a stark warning to the West.
According to the MP, Luxembourg is implicated regardless of its position, because the war is also about energy, information, and propaganda.
The LSAP politician also showed himself impressed by the level of determination that Ukrainians have even after Russia annexed four of its regions and issued further threats of nuclear attacks. He noted that most Ukrainians that he talked to actually expect such an attack, but that they remain resolute on winning this war.
While local officials have also expressed a willingness to continue negotiating, they declared that they no longer want to do so with Vladimir Putin at the table.
Asked about recent comments on Radio 100,7 by the Alternative Democratic Reform Party MP Fernand Kartheiser, who believes that even regular referenda in Ukraine would have resulted in overwhelming support for joining Russia, Cruchten expressed disappointment.
He continued by saying that only supporters of President Putin share this view and warned that Kartheiser plays into the hands of the Russian leader by sharing this populist and radical right-wing narrative.
The LSAP politician therefore underlined that the referenda are only a farce and that the European Union will not recognise the results.
