Minister of the Interior Léon Gloden said on Friday that the government estimates the likelihood of major forest fires is high, after a summer punctuated by drought and high temperatures.

In response to a parliamentary question submitted by the Greens' Meris Sehovic, Gloden said the risk was heightened due to extreme weather conditions. The government had ordered a risk evaluation in light of the heatwaves and drought.

Currently, conversations are ongoing between the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) and a subsidiary of Cargolux, which owns a fleet of fire-fighting aircraft.

The goal is to establish an accord which could stipulate when these planes could be deployed in Luxembourg.
