The Amnesty Media Awards, which took place on Tuesday evening, were given in three categories. Caroline Mart from RTL received a special mention for her show on “Sexual abuse and its consequences”. Luc Carigari from Reporter won in the “Article” category for his text “Ausbeutung hinter legaler Fassade” (Exploitation behind a legal façade), the “Multimedia” category went to Jean-Michel Hennebert, Sibila Lind, Dominique Nauroy and Christophe Olinger from the Wort for “Vom Opfer zur Täterin” (from victim to perpetrator), and finally, RTL Radio’s Diana Hoffmann won the “Audiovisual” category with her report on the impact of the Covid pandemic on undocumented migrants.
“Centering those who shed light on the world” was the translated slogan of the sixth edition of the Amnesty Media Awards. The winners were chosen by a jury from a total of 32 contributions. Olivier Pirot, director of Amnesty Luxembourg, explains why the awards are so important:
“It is important to drive the fight for human rights to ensure it receives the biggest possible attention. And I believe this journalistic work allows us to make the connection to what is hidden in our society.”
The works that were chosen treated abuse, exploitation, violence and the housing crisis. Caroline Mart put into words what the role of the journalist is, when she dedicated her award to the two women who spoke of their sexual abuse on her show:
“This prize encourages me to talk of issues that still remain slightly taboo, no matter what people say. And if our investigations can only contribute a little to these things being discussed, and receiving more attention, that’s good.”
