Police were alerted shortly before 7pm on Monday to a physical altercation involving several individuals at Mersch railway station.
According to initial reports, two men had become involved in a dispute with a security guard. Officers arriving at the scene managed to break up the confrontation and calm those involved.
However, as police attempted to check the identities of the two suspects, the situation deteriorated further. While one of the men was presenting his identity card, the second suspect grabbed the card from the officer’s hands and attempted to escape.
After a brief chase, police were able to apprehend the fleeing man, but his companion had already managed to get away.
Back at the police station, the detained man continued to show a lack of cooperation and was clearly intoxicated. Officers decided to take him into custody, but a subsequent medical examination revealed he had sustained an injury that made detention impossible. As a result, he was transferred to hospital for further treatment.
An investigation into the incident has been launched.
