Will the reorganisation of the TICE inter-municipal transport network lead to job cuts? Outgoing Schifflange Mayor Paul Weimerskirch raised concerns during a Tuesday interview on RTL Radio, stating that uncertainty remains regarding potential staff reductions.

The remarks surprised TICE officials. In a response to our colleagues from RTL Télé, TICE President Marco Lux suggested Weimerskirch may not have been fully informed, noting that Schifflange’s TICE representative, incoming Mayor Carlo Feiereisen, has been involved in the discussions. Lux firmly dismissed any possibility of job losses, emphasising that the transition to a mixed syndicate model will “definitely” protect all employees.

The restructuring agreement – backed by a €700 million state investment over ten years, plus €150 million from participating municipalities – explicitly guarantees the employment status of TICE’s 500+ workforce, Lux stressed. “At no point were job cuts ever considered”, he added.

While final votes from the nine member municipalities are still pending, Lux described the approvals as a “formality”, noting unanimous agreement to join the new syndicate. Municipal councils are expected to formalise the decision in late September or early October, after which the Mobility Ministry can proceed with implementation.

The overhaul aims to replace TICE’s 140-vehicle bus fleet with electric models – a costly shift that would have disproportionately burdened larger municipalities without state support. The plan also targets a doubling of passenger numbers to 73,000.

Lux acknowledged current tensions within TICE, attributing them to circulating misinformation.
