Two new stops are set to open this autumn as part of the tram extension to Bonnevoie: Dernier Sol and Lycée Bouneweg.

A test phase will run during the summer, with the overhead contact line switched on from 8 July, as the first test run will take place on Monday 11 July. Two trains will circulate on the new line.

The tram will run through August without passengers, before being put into service on Sunday 11 September, just before pupils return to school for the new term.

Luxtram claims the journey from the Gare de Luxembourg to the high school (lycée) in Bonnevoie will take just 3 minutes and 40 seconds - a welcome change for pupils travelling to the school.

From September, passengers will no longer have to change transport in order to get to Kirchberg from Bonnevoie, while the extension to the Cloche d’Or will commence work this autumn.

The E section of the tram, which will link Kirchberg to Luxembourg airport, still requires the construction of a bridge spanning the A1 motorway. 110 metres long and 10 metres wide, the proposed bridge will stand on three concrete pillars, which are currently under construction.

The final stage of assembling the bridge structure will take place over two weekends in spring 2023, which will see a temporary traffic closure for part of the A1 motorway. The bridge is expected to be completed by the end of next year.

On Friday, André Van der Marck, general manager of Luxtram, said the tram extension to Findel is expected to be complete by the end of 2024. He expressed optimism that the extension to the Cloche d’Or and stadium would be concluded in 2023.
