Social housingTrade union Syvicol acknowledges municipal responsibility for creating social housing

RTL Today
Syvicol, the trade union representing the municipal authorities, expressed satisfaction at Minister for Housing Sam Tanson's initial housing proposal.

The new minister's main priority is to introduce more affordable living spaces to Luxembourg's housing market, a priority which required the collaboration of municipalities, she stressed.

The minister highlighted the need to bring prices under control by reaching a consensus amongst all the actors within the housing sector. To that end, the government will reform the 1979 law on subsidies and conventions. As Tanson explained last week, not all municipalities have begun working with the ministry yet, despite the latter's desire to help municipalities tackle this task. One issue in particular remains the lack of manpower in certain municipalities.

Syvicol president Emile Eicher confirmed that the minister had already outlined some ideas in the first meeting that corresponded to Syvicol's demands, notably the lack of manpower. According to Eicher, this issue remains a problem because the municipalities in question have not collaborated with the ministry. As a result, he is confident that the ministry is on the right track to increase Luxembourg's social housing offer.
