According to Luxembourg City Mayor Lydie Polfer, it may very well take up to 20 years before the new living district around the old Josy Barthel stadium begins taking shape. The “StadePark” project will expand over a ten-hectare surface next to the Route d’Arlon, where the tram is also expected to operate by then.

Philippe Nathan, architect at “2001", commented on the revitalisation of the former national stadium: “It is a place full of memories for many of us, which means we have something to build upon.” The old pitch is thus to be transformed into a residential park and become the figurative heart of the district. Similarly, the old firefighter station is to be integrated into the project.

About 1,000 apartments are expected to house twice as many people in the area. Mayor Polfer underlined that the project will comply with all modern criteria for quality of life, sustainability, and transportation. However, before construction work can begin, there are still a number of unfinished projects in the area to be completed, including the new athletics stadium in Hamm and the hygiene services building in Merl.

Mayor Polfer expects construction to begin in ten years. Until then, residents will have opportunities to voice their opinion on the project. City officials had previously been criticised for not being transparent enough about the details of “StadePark”.
