The report presents the perfect opportunity to send an important message to the new government, OPC president Andrew Ferrone said on Thursday. Among other things, the observatory suggests a “climate envoy” role to be overseen by the new Prime Minister.
In addition, the OPC recommends making the climate citizens’ council permanent and focusing on its expansion. The report finds that more emphasis needs to be placed on climate education, both in schools, and within the civil service.
As for Luxembourg’s financial sector, the OPC demands a strategy outlining concrete goals to make the sector more resilient and sustainable.
Although the report acknowledged that the government had made some advances since the publication of its 2022 predecessor, there is still room for improvement. The OPC recommends the new government make “fundamental changes to governance frameworks and policy”, warning that to do otherwise could see the Grand Duchy fall short of its national goals and EU targets for 2030 and 2050.
