In a press release, the party deems it "unacceptable and moreover extremely dangerous" to deploy members of the Luxembourg Army to Mozambique.
During a parliamentary meeting last Thursday, Minister of Defence François Bausch expressed his willingness to send Luxembourgish troops to the East African nation. He conveyed that within EU circles, officials were well-aware of the local resources, although the official narrative remains the fight against Islamist terrorism. Important to note as well that TotalEnergies had to halt operations due to security risks back in March. Minister Bausch explained that most of the EU members already expressed their willingness to commit to the mission, and that Luxembourg would make use of the opportunity as a training mission.
The Left believes that the concept of a training mission is only a pretence to accustom the general public to the idea of Luxembourgish troops in Mozambique. The party thus sees its long-standing criticism confirmed, and finds it unacceptable that the Grand Duchy supports this "neocolonial intervention". Moreover, they consider it a support of fossil fuels and a guaranteed way to utterly escalate the local situation.
The press release therefore demands that the government rethink its position and oppose a military intervention in Mozambique.
