At a press briefing on Tuesday morning, The Greens presented their ideas for tackling the housing situation in Luxembourg. Party officials expressed an optimistic outlook for future solutions on the issue, while acknowledging that it is a long-standing problem.

Minister for Housing Henri Kox used the briefing to review recent achievements: “Over the last five years, we have really started a housing construction offensive. The government has spent money, we’ve gone up from €40 million to €300 million, and we want this offensive to continue in the coming years. That means our goal is to reach at least €600 million per year so we can build 800 homes per year.”

The Greens’ Minister further expressed hopes that the private, public, and municipal sectors continue cooperating in the future, noting that this is the only way to create affordable housing. He went on to stress the importance of improving people’s quality of life by bringing them closer to nature, a position shared by party spokesperson Semiray Ahmedova.

The latter stated: “People have to be the centre of attention. And it is important that biodiversity returns to cities, which can in fact be planned very well. This means nature protection on the one side and housing on the other. Both are connected to each other and that is not a hurdle in any way.”

Greens’ officials closed the briefing by stressing their determination to simplify overall administrative procedures.
