Empty ShelvesThe end of an era: after 40 years, the National Library closes its doors for good

RTL Today
Last Friday was the last opportunity for people who wanted to use the National Library next to Luxembourg Cathedral.

And the building definitely looms empty now: 1.8 million books have left the shelves, packed away and on the (relatively short) journey to the new premises in Kirchberg. This puts an end to a 46-year long reign in the heart of Luxembourg, and while some employees joined the ranks in recent years, there remains an air of nostalgia.

The process of moving the headquarters from A to B has run smoothly, with no substantial complications or time issues, having even kept within the 30 September deadline.

Readers now have 3 weeks to wait until the new building opens its doors: from 2pm on the 1 October onward, the premises will be accessible to the public. On the 5 and 6 of October, an Open Day allows visitors to properly experience the library with readings, workshops and tours.

Until then, additional information can be found on their website.
