The defendant was only 17-years-old when he had to be transferred to the adult prison in Schrassig in January.

Six months ago, the ministry of justice issued a statement explaining the extraordinary measure, but declared the transfer inevitable nonetheless. The minor had previously been in the Dreiborn youth detention centre for thirteen months until the situation escalated.

The statement further conveyed that the minor had previously been placed in several domestic and foreign institutions for behavioural treatment, without any success. His aggressive tendencies had only increased over recent years. Since Luxembourg does not have an adequate institution and no solution abroad could be found, the interim transfer to Schrassig had to be made.

The suspect faced a judge on Thursday morning for physically assaulting his guardian in Dreiborn between July and November 2019. An official conveyed that the minor's initial stay was positive, but his inability to live within a group lead to isolated treatment. The physical attacks mainly occurred after being criticised by the guardians: "The boy has a good heart, but is unable to accept unwanted information." Unfortunately, no visible progress was made over the course of 13 months.

During trial, the suspect insulted the court president and told him to shut up, while also insulting the police officer and claiming he wanted to return to his cell. His attorney argued that his behaviour had considerably improved since the transfer to Schrassig. The prosecutor countered the statement by referring to an expert's opinion declaring the boy a risk for public safety and in need of adequate punishment. Part of the sentence could be lifted for psychological treatment.

The verdict is set for 30 July.
