Blue-green algae discoveredSwimming prohibited at Remerschen Lakes until further notice

RTL Today
On Friday afternoon, the Water Management Authority issued a ban on swimming in the Remerschen lakes until further notice.

The decision comes after routine examinations revealed a significant presence of cyanobacteria, commonly known as “blue-green algae,” in the water.

Due to the potential health risks associated with these bacteria, authorities have taken a cautious approach by prohibiting swimming until the situation is resolved. Cyanobacteria can pose dangers to humans, pets, and aquatic wildlife, with symptoms ranging from headaches and skin irritations to nausea.

Authorities have advised against allowing dogs and other pets to drink from the affected waters and urged people to avoid any direct contact with the water. In addition, fishing in the affected lakes is discouraged, and consumption of fish caught in these waters is not recommended.

It should be noted that this swimming ban currently applies only to the lakes in Remerschen. Larger lakes elsewhere in the country, such as Weiswampach, the Upper Sûre Lake, and the lake in Echternach, still permit swimming, as confirmed by the Water Management Authority.
