A tragedy was averted on the German-Luxembourg border on Sunday evening as a swimmer was saved in what has been described as a "major rescue operation" in which the Luxembourg emergency services assisted.

The incident occurred at around 11pm on Sunday. Emergency services were informed that a person had decided to swim in the Sûre and could no longer be found.

Major resources were immediately deployed to locate the swimmer. The fire brigades of Bollendorf, Echternacherbruck, Ferschweiler, and Echternach were all sent to the scene. Drones were also used to locate the victim.

The man was eventually found at around 11.45pm. Aged around forty, he was under the influence of alcohol when he had decided to go swimming.

Emergency services decided to take the man to a hospital for a check-up.
