As Luxembourg experiences a heatwave, the association Stëmm vun der Strooss has issued an urgent warning that the extreme temperatures could be life-threatening for people without shelter.
With no permanent roof over their heads, homeless individuals are especially vulnerable to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and other serious health risks, they warn in a press release.
In response to the dangerous conditions, Stëmm vun der Strooss is prioritising free water distribution at its social restaurants in Hollerich, Esch-sur-Alzette, and Ettelbruck.
The organisation is also providing shade using large parasols to offer some respite for those forced to spend the day outdoors.
Street workers in Luxembourg City have been urged to pay increased attention to people living rough during this period of extreme heat, as their safety is at greater risk.
While the Winter Action programme offers temporary emergency accommodation during the cold months, there is no comparable initiative to provide shelter during summer heatwaves.
This gap in social support leaves many homeless people exposed to the dangers of high temperatures with limited options for relief.
