Turnover plunged by almost €12 million, or 45.1%
The figures are disastrous, admits Paul Hammelmann, the chairman of the board of directors, who nevertheless tried to be positive. He reported that the hotel has been doing well during this difficult period, and that they have taken advantage of it to make certain investments (new active rehabilitation equipment, modernisation of the hotel's infrastructure). Thanks to state aid, they did not have to lay off anyone.
During the first lockdown last year, all activities on the estate were shut down (health, hotel, spa, wellness, fitness, restaurants, events). The hotel remained open during the second lockdown, which benefited many border residents.
With the easing of restrictions in Luxembourg, customers are finally back in the wellness and fitness areas since 4 May. Only the hammam has not been able to reopen.
For the time being, everything is by prior booking. The saunas are large but still limited to 4 people. The demand is high and unfortunately the spa resort cannot accept everyone, underlines Paule Hammelmann. The estate continues to suffer from low profitability, as long as all the staff continue to work.
In consultation with the Rehazenter, the resort is developing a new project concerning post-Covid treatments. Symptoms such as drowsiness, joint pain, coughing, insomnia should be treated in the spa area.
Approximately 80% of people who have suffered from a severe infection still suffer from long-lasting symptoms, adds the chairman of the board.
As for the future: the Mondorf spa estate is to be renovated, but the work will not begin until 2024.
