Open letter to Xavier BettelSEW and Landesverband unions criticise reopening of schools

According to the SEW and Landesverband unions, teaching staff are not supporting the current school model. The teachers' efforts are enormous and the constant changes trigger confusion, the unions said.

SEW (OGBL's Union for Education and Science) and the Landesverband trade union have addressed an open letter to Prime Minister Xavier Bettel in which they argue that Minister of Education Claude Meisch has refused to cooperate with school representatives and failed to discuss alternatives to the current model.

Teachers believe the chosen model to be absurd, the unions stressed. Physical distancing measures cannot be respected in school buses and some municipalities have not yet found solutions to make up for the lack of available classrooms and teaching staff.

In some cases, it was therefore impossible to divide classes into two groups, the unions lamented. SEW and Landesverband also called the morning supervision in schoolyards a "farce" as it invalidates the ongoing efforts to maintain physical distance between pupils.

The unions demanded that the government bring to life a task force featuring representatives of trade unions, parent associations, Syvicol, and the Ministry of Education.

They concluded that no time should be wasted in implementing measures that do justice to the health safety of children and their parents.
