After red alertRetirement home managers relieved that 'overall, the situation was well-managed.'

A red alert was issued, urging people to refrain from travelling and, if feasible, work from home. However, certain sectors, like retirement homes, may not have the flexibility to implement remote work.

Servior is the largest private operator of facilities for the elderly in the country - it encompasses homes for permanent residence, temporary care residences, and a meals-on-wheels service through which meals are delivered to private homes. To ensure optimal service for clients, shifts were adjusted, as explained by Servior CEO Alain Dichter on Wednesday.

“Indeed, the morning shifts can be extended if afternoons shift begin later, and similarly for the evening shifts. This will continue tomorrow [Thursday, eds. note] morning for employees transitioning from the night shift to the morning shift - if someone arrives late, we can ensure that work colleagues are always present. The same approach is applied across various departments, including kitchens and the Meals on Wheels service.”

Clients would be the first to experience an impact if a larger number of on-site employees were unavailable. Daily routines may be disrupted, necessitating a focus on essential services. For instance, meal options could be limited to one instead of the usual two or three. Delays might occur in certain cases for services like Meals on Wheels.

“Some drivers left up to an hour and a half earlier than scheduled. However, they sometimes required an additional one to two hours to arrive. For those living at home, meal delivery timing is regulated meaning that delays were certainly expected this morning. Among 800 meals, we self-deliver around 600 and some were delivered later. In certain cases, inaccessible roads or accidents, which even damaged two vans, prevented us from reaching certain areas on time.”

Nevertheless, Dichter expressed overall satisfaction with the situation and its handling. Indeed, much was learned from the experiences during the COVID times.
