The A1 motorway was closed on Friday morning due to a fatal accident involving a lorry, which consequently led to a traffic build-up in the area around the capital.
As a result, multiple coaches transporting the participating cycling teams did not arrive in Mertert on time for the race’s departure. Tour de Luxembourg organisers ultimately decided to cancel the first leg of the race, permitting riders to set off on a shorter route at 1pm.
The Stage 3 conclusion at Vianden Castle would still take place, organisers said, albeit at a later finish time than planned.
