On Friday morning, the police reported details of the incident.

At 10.20pm on Thursday 25 July, a car hit a pedestrian not far from Asselborn, during a long left turn, and the victim was thrown against the windshield in the full frontal collision.

The young man, a 23 year old from Belgium, died on the spot from his injuries.

The circumstances of the man's death will now be subject to an investigation. Naturally, the police will be unable to provide further details until the investigation concludes.

Why was the victim by the side of the road?

A number of questions have emerged in the wake of the tragic incident. According to our sources, the young Belgian was in the Troisvierges/Wincrange area with a group of friends, all originating from the Brussels area.

The victim was sighted at 9.30pm wearing only his underwear, halfway between Asselborn and Troisvierges. A witness told RTL he was walking in the middle of the street and in addition to only wearing his underwear, had neither shoes or socks on. The witness said the man appeared to be confused, which is why they contacted 113 immediately.

The witness presumed that the police would have come to the victim's aid quickly, given that the Troisvierges police station was not far from where they had seen the young man. However, that did not occur. 50 minutes later, the fatal accident occurred as a car hit the man head-on after a long left-hand corner.

Further details claim that the group the victim had been with had previously attracted the attention of other motorists in the daytime, namely their reckless driving in a van. Additionally, the organisers of 24h bikes in Wincrange noticed the group's behaviour and reported it to the police.

Further sources claim that the firefighters had followed the van for a time to ensure that they could halt traffic to prevent any accidents. One to two hours prior to the tragic accident, a police patrol stopped the victim alone, but had no cause to take him into custody. Rumours from the area also claim that members of the group ended up arguing in front of a bar along the N12.

The police investigation will have to determine why exactly the young man was alone and on foot on a part of the road not suited to pedestrians. The road had no pavement or lighting to make it safe to walk at that time.

There has been no further information concerning the other members of the group that the victim belonged to. However, following the above information, it appears likely that the driver who hit the pedestrian was not at fault.
