An estimated 1,000 cubic metres of manure has polluted three rivers as a result of the spill.

On Tuesday evening, the Ministry for the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development put out a statement (FR) to acknowledge that the source of the spill has yet to be determined, same as the full implications on the environment. The prosecutor’s office has since opened an official investigation into the incident.

The statement from the Ministry further notes that the majority of biogas stations in Luxembourg were built after the turn of the century, which is why thorough safety analyses are now being planned to reduce the risk of potential spills. Necessary adaptations will be made and discussions with people in the sector held, announces the statement.

While there have been larger spills in the past, this latest incident stands out due to the unusually large amount of liquid that flowed into rivers.

According to the first reports, a technical incident related to a pipe is believed to be the source of the accidental spill.
