A week after two deaths were reported in Luxembourg’s national prison system within just two days, the prisoners’ rights association “eran, eraus ... an elo?” has spoken out to highlight persistent structural problems in the country’s correctional sector. The association, which advocates for inmates’ rights, is drawing attention to two major issues and calling for political intervention.
The group points out that the Uerschterhaff prison – intended solely for pre-trial detainees – is chronically overcrowded. The association is urging Minister of Justice Elisabeth Margue to address the issue and take meaningful action.
The association further notes that inmates transferred to the National Centre for Psychiatric Care (CHNP) in Ettelbruck face inadequate conditions, as the facility is not designed for the psychiatric care of detainees. The CHNP’s infrastructure, according to the group, is not suitable for holding and treating prisoners with psychiatric disorders.
