Shoppers at the Topaze complex in Mersch were forced to evacuate on Tuesday afternoon, after thick black smoke began emanating from the underground car park.

According to reports, a fire broke out around 5.15pm at the “Mierscherbierg” complex along the RN7. The Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) confirmed a car had caught fire in the underground car park of the Topaze shopping centre. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

The shopping centre was evacuated shortly after the smoke was spotted, with shoppers gathering in the outside car park.

Some 20 fire fighters from the Mersch, Lintgen and Bissen fire brigades assembled at the scene to put the flames out. The origins of the fire were unknown at the time of writing.

Police are seeking witnesses to the incident, urging anyone with information to contact Mersch police station on (+352) 244 90 1000 or via email: police.mersch@police.etat.lu.
