Luxembourg authorities collaborated with their French counterparts to conduct checks at three spots along the border, in Audun-le-Tiche, Belvaux-Sanem and Rumelange. They stopped 300 vehicles between 2 and 5pm on 11 December. The operation was designed to highlight the illegal transport of waste across the border, as such transport is only permitted with official authorisation.
19 vehicles were fined in Luxembourg, with nine accused of violating national or cross-border waste regulations. The fines corresponded to amounts between €145 and €500.
In France, two drivers were sanctioned with €150 fines. The vehicles were mostly found to be transporting waste from construction sites, including carton, cables, concrete, wood, and glass.
The operation was carried out by 30 officers from both countries and sought to raise awareness of the need to report any waste transport via official channels in order to receive authorisation and reduce illegal practices.
