The Pirates gained one additional seat during the recent election, which means they now have three MPs in the legislative Chamber. Clement underlined that although some projections even showed a gain of five seats, three additional ones would have been more realistic and were only narrowly missed in the end. He went on to say that the party progressed in three election districts while only under-performing in one.

Daniel Frères, lead candidate for the Pirates in the eastern constituency, is said to have accepted his poor election performance by announcing that he will no longer seek to play a role for the Pirate Party at a national level. Nevertheless, he still intends to continue supporting the Pirates at a municipal level by fulfilling his duties as a Remich council member.

Opposition work

MP Clement and the Pirates are once again ready to take on the role of an opposition party in the Chamber of Deputies. Clement explained that they will challenge the government whenever it is necessary and remind officials to be transparent, work for the people of this country, and keep their campaign promises.

Clement shared his opinion that the coalition in the making will potentially further the social divide by making the rich richer and the poor poorer. When asked about the role that each of the future government parties will play in this process, Clement still warned to “not throw the baby out with the bathwater” and that the coalition agreement will have to be analysed once it is ready.

However, looking toward the new composition of the Chamber, he expects there to be fiercer debates among lawmakers.
