Luxembourg generally has very high standards when it comes to breeding, keeping and slaughtering livestock. The association of young farmers stated they wished to act in the interest of animal welfare, demanding that the transport and slaughter of Luxembourg cattle in non-EU countries, and which do not respect these quality standards, should be prohibited. They said the ban would avoid tragic footage as featured in the below report:
The petition has already garnered more than 3,000 signatures on the Chamber of Deputies website. In addition, the “Lëtzebuerger Landjugend a Jongbaueren” has issued a call for the promotion of fattening and local marketing of Luxembourg livestock.
The transport of cattle by ship - as was recently highlighted by the Suez Canal blockage - affects millions of animals each year, transported from Europe to the Middle East in unsuitable conditions.
Some countries such as the United Kingdom and Australia have announced measures to regulate the conditions under which live animals are exported. The UK government recently launched a consultation on banning the export of live animals for fattening or slaughter, with the aim of reducing animal suffering.
